Today’s post is all about birthdays, yay!
Birthdays are really fun times, especially if it is your birthday.

~Cake & Presents, yay!~
I have always loved my birthday. It is December 31, and it’s usually really awesome. I get to have a New Year Eve’s birthday party, which is always fun!
I share my birthday with writer Nicholas Sparks and project runway winner Gretchen Jones.
Also, I share my birthday with Marcus Marble, my imaginary boyfriend from my own creation Pretty in Black.
And I will tell you more about how we came to have the same birthday in a little bit, right after I tell you about my favorite birthday memory.
This birthday memory comes from December 31, 2004 when I was turning 16.
The truth about me when I was 16, is that, I didn’t have that many friends. I was considered anti-social, weird, and awkward, and sometimes, possibly creepy. So, as it was, there wasn’t a need for birthday invitations.
Snow covered the ground outside, the Christmas tree in our house was still there, and I do not like anything about Christmas, you guys. The decorations were everywhere, too.
At 16, I was incredibly angsty, no lie. So that morning when I woke up, I was just in this I don’t like anything mood so don’t tell me Happy Birthday.
And that was that.
But guess what happened. My brother, the cool kid, the kid I was not and could never be, was having a freaking New Year Eve’s party on my birthday. Mhm, yep. The fact it was my birthday and I was miserable didn’t bother him one tiny bit. He called up some friends and before I knew it, boom! The house was full of people and my mother and grandmother didn’t stop him.
And the all day party began before I even got out of my PJs, he had people already coming over.
Embarrassing moment ensues: I’m laying on the couch, flipping through TV channels, trying to find something at least mildly entertaining to watch, while I figure out what I’m going to do for the rest of the day.
So, I’m in my own little world, when, before I even realize it, some guy with shaggy hazel colored hair is leaned down in my face, saying, “Hey, happy birthday,” and I didn’t even know him, what the crap?!
One of my brother’s friends. One of my brothers really freakin’ HOT friends...OMG, i’m still in my pajamas and my hair is a mess. I’m about to kill my brother for that.
So, this got my attention, fast. He just smiled and moved on through the house.
I just wanted to shut myself in my room, and that’s pretty much what I did, or I should say, what I tried doing.
I had my stereo on, playing The Killers and my brother and his friends were supposed to be outside doing...idk, something. And they were, all but one of them, who sat alone in the room adjacent from mine and it was creepy because the door was open and it was like he was monitoring me.
He pretty much was, because when I exited my room, he stood up and spoke.
And after that, I have no idea what happened. I was star-struck because after that all I remember is talking to him and laughing and playing Uno and watching movies with him and then talking to him all night, about anything and everything, and he even slumbered over in my brother’s room with some other friends.
The next morning, he even stayed to help clean up, and to take down the Christmas decorations. And he said, “I really like you, you’re funny.”
Was he serious? He thought my sarcasm was funny..that was new.
And then he just kind of left.
So, then two weeks later, he’s on my porch everyday after school, sometimes he hid behind a tree, or sat on the back deck, but he was always there and we ended up dating. One day, just randomly, he brought me a mix tape, it was cute, because it had “our” song on it, and he had stayed up all night making it.
So that is like, my favorite birthday memory, because he was my first boyfriend and my most awesome one and we dated for over a year.
He’s also the only guy I ever wrote a set of poems for. And by doing that, my deeper feelings rose to the surface, and it wasn’t long after I wrote those poems, that I began to see writing as something more than just a hobby. It became a greater part of me, a way to express my emotions and thoughts.
I’ve realized as I’ve been writing this, that birthdays do seem to play a bigger part in my work than what I knew.
There is always a special day or month that I begin a book on, and that is somewhere between March-April. This is mybest book creation time, when all my better ideas arrive and the Muse comes out to play.
Around this time last year, I was getting some major inspiration for Pretty in Black while in a cemetery, and now...I’m finishing up Black Satin, the second book in the series, and I’m creating a new book.
Also, I released Pretty in Black on Ellie Piper’s birthday, November 2, 2011.
But, now I’m just rambling.
So, why is Marcus Marble’s birthday on December 31? Easy. His character came to me on my birthday in 2010, before work on the novel began, therefore this became his birthday, because he was being born.
His birthday plays a major role in the Pretty in Black series, because the Risorgimento happens in Nevermore on December 31, every year.
This is the time when evermores get to decide if they want to stay in Nevermore, or pass on through to the afterlife. This is also the time when new members get brought to Nevermore. There’s a big masquerade party and everything.
When Marcus resurrected, and got brought to Nevermore, that also happened on his birthday.
This year, the Risorgimento is going to be even more important than it was last time, because this year, Marcus Marble must decide if he’s passing on, or staying in Nevermore.
What’s at risk if he stays:  The fact Ellie just might reject him, and he will be forever stuck in Nevermore with no one to love, for eternity.
Why? Because evermores only get 100 years to find true love, and if they can’t do it by then, the darker side takes over and their hearts close, and they have no humanity left within them. They become bitter.
What’s at risk if he leaves? Never seeing Ellie again. She may be devastated that he’s not around.
Why would he have to leave? Let’s just say, there’s more going on in Nevermore than we knew about in book one, and Marcus might have to make the decision to pass on, in order to protect Ellie.
Here’s the official Black Satin blurb:
What if you weren’t who you thought you were?
What if your whole life changed in an instant and you were released to a new identity?
What if you were forced to kill the one you love?
What if everything you knew wasn’t real, and you awaken to a new world?
What if love could take you to unknown places?
How beautiful is death really?
Marcus Marble has disappeared from Ellie’s life, and she needs answers to questions and he’s the only one who can answer them.
How is her sister back from the dead, and why is Ellie still alive?
When Ellie realizes Marcus isn’t coming back, she is forced to move on with her life the best way she can, in hopes of finding the answers herself, but when people at school begin to be viciously murdered, and Giles reveals to her a life changing secret, she decides to investigate the possible truth of it. What she discovers is more than she thought she would.
The only time Ellie feels normal is when she’s around Walter, the new guy at school. And normal is how she wants to feel, now that Marcus is gone from her life.
But Walter may not be all that he seems, either, and she just might spiral in to an even more dark world, she never thought possible.
And when it occurs to her that Marcus has made the decision to pass on through to the afterlife, during the Risorgimento, she races against time to stop him, while knowing she has feelings for Walter, too.
Will she make it in time to stop Marcus from passing through, and if she does, what will she tell Walter?
Her heart will have to make the final decision.
But will the choice be worth dying for?
There is soooo much going on in Black Satin, and I’ve tried not to give any of the good stuff away in the blurb, but what Iam giving away is this:
Two scenes that take place on Marcus’ Birthday: One scene from Pretty in Black, and one small teaser scene from the forthcoming Black Satin.
And here are the linkys to read them.
And on the last linky, and i’m only doing this in honor of this birthday guest post and Marcus’ Birthday, you will find a BIG surprise!
